Availability-based Tariff (ABT) On-line Monitoring Solution

ABT is a commercial tariff regime designed to inculcate grid discipline and to provide a system for commercial settlement for pricing ‘unscheduled’ transactions at grid level.

Our solution provides the information required by participants of the scheme in India, using data from each of the 15-minute blocks that are used in managing the grid. The specially-developed software calculates in real time the projected financial impact for participants for each 15-minute block, based on the amount of energy drawn from or supplied to the grid.

We supply all the grid meters and the back-end software required. Information is brought back automatically from all the transaction points on the grid, using the most appropriate communications platforms, and is processed to generate customised reports for each participant, according to need.

Reports generated by the software can be used for day-ahead forecasting and for balancing the conflicting demands of generators and large consumers.

The solution can be scaled to suit any size of grid. In India more than 9,500 transaction points are connected together. Individual consumers are provided in real time with the information they need in order to decide whether to shed load and avoid penalties under the ABT regime. This form of collective responsibility is of great benefit to consumers, suppliers and to those involved in managing the grid.

  • ABT accounting and decision support at a Utility in India

A large utility in India, wanted to smoothen operation and decision support under the ABT regime and needed an online system to do this. Our online monitoring system enabled the utility to view information about power flow, energy loss, transformer and feeder loading, on demand, for each of its administrative units. The various reports generated through the system were helpful in balancing losses, planning, forecasting and improve utilisation of the transmission resources.
  • ABT Metering and Data Acquisition System

A large Indian company, involved in mineral extraction was struggling to account for electricity generated by its power plants, actual energy used, electricity transmitted and delivered to the grid and estimation of its contract demand. By implementing our ABT metering and data acquisition system the company was able to fulfill regulatory requirements and reduce their contract demand. This lead to a saving of approximately Rs. 3 million per month.
