PLC/DLC Communications

We have always believed that metering is just the first link in a chain in which communications is the most difficult part to implement. We always try to select the best method available for any particular application. Communicating via power lines or distribution lines is very attractive as it removes the need for additional wiring. Power-line carrier (PLC) and distribution-line carrier (DLC) systems, by their very nature, are always available and do not require additional cabling. Over the last 20 years we have worked with PLC and DLC technologies in various forms.

DLC is ideal for forming wide area networks (WAN) for ‘last-mile’ communications with groups of meters. We can use DLC for meter reading, tariff and programming updates and for load control.

PLC is perfectly suited to short-range communications over the power line network, at the local level or within premises. We can use PLC for meter reading, vending, tariff control, load control, smart metering and home automation. PLC can be used alongside low-power radio (LPR) technologies in order to implement a home area network (HAN).
