Demand Side Management (DSM) is a step taken by power utilities that influence the energy consumption and its pattern by the end consumers. This includes actions targeting reduction of peak demand or reduction of energy consumed during periods when energy supply network are at stress.
Peak demand management may not necessarily decrease total energy consumption but could reduce the need for investments in networks and/or power plants. Therefore a strategic energy conservation plan would lead to reduction of energy consumption. The focus areas of conservation under DSM include auto connect/disconnect facility at consumer points, regulated or pre-defined pattern of energy supply for agricultural loads, public street lighting and maximum demand controlling through advanced communication technologies like DLC, low power radio communication.
